2022 UTV BUYER’S GUIDE

After what many thought would be a definite downturn in the powersports market, thanks to a worldwide pandemic, 2020 and 2021 turned out to be a big surprise. UTV manufacturers had a banner year, and vehicles were hard to find all of a sudden.

We’ve covered more than 275 models in this year’s “Buyer’s Guide,” which is quite a few more than we did in last year’s buyer’s guide. Most likely there’s something in this buyer’s guide that will catch your attention.

Can-Am brought back the Commander name for a lineup of completely new vehicles. Can-Am also pushed the engine envelope, bringing a 200-horsepower powerplant to select models in the Maverick X3 line, as well as two more new engines—the HD7/700 ACE and HD9—replacing the HD5, HD8 and 800.

Polaris, dropped a handful of models, but comes to 2022 with exciting new ones. Of course, Dirt Wheels will stay tuned to the happenings as well and keep you posted.

We did not write about every Kawasaki Mule available, but we did include more than we did last year. We weren’t able to even include all the UTV manufacturers. There simply wasn’t enough room to do so. Those we unfortunately had to bypass this year are Bobcat (www.bobcat.com/utv), Tomcar (www.tomcar.com), Kioti (www.kioti.com), Roxor (ww.roxoroffroad.com ),Segway (www.powersports.segway.com) and Volcon(www.volcon.com).

ARCTIC CAT WILDCAT XX/XX LTD/XX SE

The 130-horsepower Wildcat XX line added an LTD and SE version. The Wildcat XX has beefy suspension with bump-eating Fox 2.5 Podium QS3 shocks with Bottom-Out Control. The LTD adds bumpers and color-matched ROPS and suspension. With the SE version, you get all that, plus a 3500-pound Warn winch and rock sliders. The LTD and SE also get the ADAPT CVT featuring Cat-designed clutches.

ARCTIC CAT PROWLER PRO EPS/PRO XT/ PRO LTD

The Prowler Pro line expanded for 2022, losing the Ranch Edition but adding the Pro XT and Pro LTD models. Common features include a 50-horsepower engine, EPS, doors and three-passenger seating. The XT adds color-matched springs, a 4500-pound Warn winch and roof. The LTD has those same features, as well as a color-matched ROPS and overhead console.

If three seats just aren’t enough, bump up to six-seat Prowler Pro Crew models, which mirror the Prowler Pro vehicles but with another bench seat. The features are similar—premium bumper and doors on the EPS; roof, color-matched springs and 4500-pound Warn winch on the XT; and color-matched ROPS and an overhead console on the LTD.

ARCTIC CAT PROWLER 500

Although it’s the smallest in the Prowler family, the two-passenger 500 can still do its fair share of work (and play) with its decent capabilities in Towing: and hauling. The 500-pound capacity cargo bed offers multiple tie-down points, and there is additional storage space under the hood. There is no EPS.

ARGO XF 500/XF 500 LE

Known for its amphibious, multi-wheeled vehicles, Argo has its new XF UTVs. Available in early 2022, the mid-size XF offers lots of storage. Features include an automatic CVT, push-button 2WD/4WD, adjustable preload, tilt steering wheel and 10 inches of ground clearance. EPS and a 3000-pound winch are standard on the LE model.

Argo’s amphibious (Front)ier models are low-speed, but fun in the woods, mud or water. Features include Argo’s Classic transmission, Progressive steering and the new Instant Torque Clutch (ITC). The one-piece lower body has a smooth, durable under-body that floats over potential snags, stumps, outcrops, swamps and water. The 8×8 features four tires on each side of the vehicle.

Can-Am has bumped some of its turbocharged engines to a mighty 200 ponies. These X3s are 72 inches wide with 15.5 inches of ground clearance. They feature a belt-monitoring system and new pDrive roller clutch system. The X rs version gets a Smart-Lok, Fox 3.0 Podium RC2 S shocks, 32-inch tires, four-point harness, roof and skid plate. The Smart-Shox model Fox 3.0 shocks with bypass and Smart-Shox technology with DDA valve.

The “RC” stands for “rock crawler,” and there are two models in this year’s lineup, the “narrow” 64-inch and wider 72-inch version. Both offer 200 horsepower and Can-Am’s Smart-Lok diff technology and its 4WD Rock and 4WD Trail modes. Plus, a belt-monitoring system, 4500-pound winch and quarter doors. The 72-inch model gets Fox 3.0 Podium RC2 shocks with bypass, four-point harnesses, a (Front) bumper and aluminum roof.

These two turbo Mavericks have similarities with the rc models when it comes to width but are designed for mud and slop. With this Max mudder, up to four mud lovers can enjoy getting a little (or a lot) dirty. This 72-inch Max gets the new 200-horsepower engine, and that means no mud hole is safe. Smart-Lok (with 4WD Mud mode), a full skid plate, belt-monitoring system, and snorkeled engine air and CVT intake are also standard fare on this model.

A little farther up the food chain in the new Commander lineup are the two- and four-seat XT-P models, which are also 64 inches wide and come with arched double A-arms. The Max version of the Defender has all the same features the two-seat models have but has seating for up to four passengers. These four Defender models come with a 6×4.5-foot bed for hauling big loads, whether for work or hunting. The Limited gets an enclosed cab with A/C and heat, full glass windshield, full doors and electric windows.
