A recent controversy has sparked debates in the transportation sector of Malaysia. The transport minister, Loke Siew Fook, has categorically denied forcing express bus operators, including Aeroline, to operate solely from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) in Bandar Tasik Selatan.
But here's where it gets controversial... Loke emphasized that while his ministry isn't forcing anyone to TBS, it is crucial for bus operators to choose safe and licensed areas as terminals. He pointed out that TBS, located about 13km from the city center, is the main approved terminal.
The controversy began when Zulco Sdn Bhd, the operator of Aeroline's express bus services, received a suspension notice from the Land Transport Agency (Apad). Apad issued three show-cause letters between March and October, citing the misuse of their operating license for unauthorized pick-up and drop-off locations instead of approved bus terminals.
However, Loke clarified that his ministry is open to facilitating licensing for other suitable locations with proper facilities. He mentioned shopping malls like 1 Utama, Lalaport Bukit Bintang, and IOI City Mall in Putrajaya as potential alternatives. Loke added that the previous definition of a terminal was too strict, and they are simplifying the criteria to allow more areas to qualify.
The minister also addressed Aeroline's popular pick-up and drop-off point at Corus KLCC, stating that it is unsuitable due to its roadside location. He emphasized the importance of striking a balance between convenience and public safety.
And this is the part most people miss... Loke highlighted the potential consequences of accidents occurring near shopping malls, where the ministry could be held accountable. He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to ensure public safety while maintaining convenience.
What are your thoughts on this matter? Do you think the ministry's decision to encourage licensed terminals is a step towards safer transportation, or is it an unnecessary restriction? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments below!
