The Grizzlies' second-year center, Zach Edey, has been a game-changer since his mid-November debut, according to Michael Wallace of Grind City Media. After a slow start with a 4-11 record, Memphis has turned things around, winning five of their last six games, largely thanks to Edey's two-way play. His impact has been immense, as head coach Tuomas Iisalo noted, 'Everything.'
On Sunday, Edey had his best NBA game yet, dominating the Kings with 32 points, 17 rebounds, and 5 blocks in just 29 minutes. His field goal shooting was impressive at 16-of-20 (80%), and the Grizzlies' performance with him on the court was outstanding, resulting in a plus-25 score and an eight-point victory. Edey's confidence and comfort have been key, as he's been settling in, feeling like he's back at Purdue, and the team's chemistry has been exceptional.
Over the past three games, Edey's averages are impressive: 19.3 PPG, 17.0 RPG, and 3.3 BPG, with an incredible 71.8% field goal percentage in 32.0 MPG. His performance has earned him a spot as a finalist for NBA Western Conference Player of the Week.
Ja Morant, another Grizzlies player, has also been making waves. Despite trade rumors circulating due to his poor start and disinterested body language, Morant has been actively engaging and encouraging his teammates and coaches during recent wins. His leadership and communication have been praised by coach Iisalo, who sees a positive shift in Morant's attitude.
In other Southwest news, the Spurs' Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle are out again on Tuesday due to injuries, but they're making progress and starting on-court work. Meanwhile, Zion Williamson of the Pelicans expressed confidence in his recovery from injury, stating he hasn't felt this good since college. Coach James Borrego also highlighted Williamson's leadership growth, emphasizing the importance of his development as a team leader.
