The Cloud's Downfall: A Personal Revolution
We've become so reliant on cloud services that a single outage can grind our productivity to a halt. But here's the thing: you don't have to be at the mercy of these services. I discovered a way to reclaim control and it all started with a simple idea: build my own home lab.
A Journey to Self-Sufficiency
A few months ago, I decided to replace cloud storage with a personal home lab. It was a decision that transformed my digital life. With just one small computer, I gained all the storage and processing power I needed to streamline my daily tasks. The heart of this setup? Proxmox.
Proxmox: A Lightweight Powerhouse
Proxmox is a virtual environment that's both lightweight and incredibly capable. It can handle full virtual machines and also supports Linux containers (LXC), offering a more efficient way to run specific services. My setup includes three key services within Proxmox: TrueNAS, Home Assistant (both running as VMs), and Jellyfin (running in an LXC). What surprised me was how easy it was to set up. I migrated my existing Home Assistant setup, complete with devices and integrations, into a VM with minimal effort. Some updates were needed, but the core structure was already there.
The Beauty of Customization
Proxmox makes it simple to add new services. When I set up Jellyfin, I used a community script that perfectly configured the LXC container. I just needed to assign a GPU for hardware transcoding, which was a straightforward process. Integrating storage with TrueNAS was seamless too, ensuring my media library remained intact during the transition from Jellyfin within TrueNAS to Proxmox.
TrueNAS: The Hub of My Digital Life
While Proxmox is the foundation, TrueNAS is where most of my services reside. I currently have eight services running on my TrueNAS server, including Nextcloud, Immich, OnlyOffice, Tailscale, Nginx Proxy Manager, and Miniflux, an RSS feed reader. These services, especially Nextcloud and Immich, are now integral to my daily routine. Nextcloud is my go-to cloud storage for documents and work files. Immich is my personal memory bank, storing all my photos and videos.
Data Security and Peace of Mind
TrueNAS allows me to organize data for these services into defined datasets, and I've set up backups to a Backblaze B2 bucket. This pay-as-you-go system saves me money and provides peace of mind, ensuring I can restore data if needed. Other services, like Tailscale and Nginx, enhance accessibility, allowing me to access my services remotely with custom URLs.
Energy Efficiency: A Surprising Benefit
Despite running multiple services, both TrueNAS and Proxmox report low CPU usage, keeping energy costs low. This efficiency is a pleasant surprise, especially considering the power of the services running on this single computer.
The Mighty Mini PC
All these services are contained within a single Proxmox node: an Asus NUC Pro 14. This tiny computer, with a laptop processor and no discrete GPU, packs enough punch to run everything smoothly. While I have a high-end model, the low CPU usage demonstrates that you don't need an extremely powerful machine. An older, discounted unit or a more modern, lower-tier machine would also perform well, offering a cost-effective solution.
The Benefits: Independence and Cost-Effectiveness
Having a server that powers important services in your home, without relying on the cloud, is incredibly liberating. And it's achievable with a low-power machine that won't break the bank on electricity bills. While developers appreciate contributions, you can support them on your terms. It's a win-win situation.
A Life-Changing Experience
Setting up Proxmox and TrueNAS on this mini PC has been life-changing. It might sound dramatic, but having my important data on a server I own, with fast transfer speeds and lower costs than cloud subscriptions, has simplified my life. It does require learning and seeking help, but the experience is rewarding. You don't need a powerful computer or a huge budget; a low-end PC can suffice. My home lab has given me control, security, and peace of mind, and I highly recommend exploring this path.
